Working out the due date
Most payment terms count calendar days from the invoice date. For example, Net 30 on an invoice dated 1 March gives a due date of 31 March. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays are included in the count unless the terms exclude them.
Typical invoice payment terms
- Due on receipt: payment is expected on the day the invoice is issued.
- Net 7, Net 10, Net 15: payment is due 7, 10 or 15 days after the invoice date.
- Net 30: the customer pays within 30 days of the invoice date; it is a very common term.
- Net 45, Net 60, Net 90: longer terms, due 45, 60 or 90 days after the invoice date.
- EOM (end of month): the invoice is due on the final day of the month it is dated in.
- Net 30 EOM: payment is due 30 days after the end of the month in which the invoice is dated.
Because EOM terms are used in slightly different ways, read the wording of your agreement.
When the due date falls on a weekend
Some businesses treat the next working day as the due date when it lands on a Saturday or Sunday. With the weekend box ticked, a due date on Saturday or Sunday is shifted to Monday.
